This was my first experience attending the world class music festival, Jazz in the Gardens and I have to say it was all that I hoped for and more. Jazz in the Gardens celebrates diversity, culture and art through various genres of music. Anyone that appreciates great music would absolutely love this event. I was so excited for the return of Anita Baker as the headliner, who is also on her farewell tour. My fascination with her began since before I can remember because of my Mom & Dad’s slight obsession with her. They programmed her songs into my memory bank because they loved her music so much and I in turn became a fan.
Opening up the evening was A. Randolph Band and Trombone Shorty which really got the crowd going. Smokey slowed it down and had us all Cruisin’ with him. Fantasia came out and lit up the stage and had everyone on their feet during her upbeat set.
Chaka Khan closed out the event with a medley of her many hit songs.
The night started right with Ms. Baker tearing the house down with her many hits reminiscent of a bygone era that is sorely missed. It was a treat to see and hear Anita as her timeless music portfolio is as relevant today as it was when I first heard them. What’s your favorite Anita Baker song? Mine is “Giving You the Best That I’ve Got“.
I enjoyed all of the talented performers that were representing for Miami Gardens at the Jazz Fest. It was definitely a pleasure spending time at the City of Miami Gardens premier musical event and I look forward to next year.
